The winter holidays are special to Vizcaya because James Deering, the owner, came to the estate on Christmas Day in 1916. To celebrate the occasion and the holiday season, each year Vizcaya decorates the Main House as it might have been 100 years ago when Deering was in residence. Visit the Main House anytime during Vizcaya’s normal operating hours to see the festive décor!
For an extra special treat, 700 locals joined us for A Holiday Evening at Vizcaya Village on December 13th from 6 - 9 p.m. to celebrate the winter traditions of the families that lived and worked at Vizcaya 100 years ago. Taking advantage of the rare opportunity to see the Village at night, families explored on their own, took lots of photos, enjoyed caroling, art making, tours and holiday treats. Additionally, the Village was decorated with ornaments made by visitors in the month preceding the program. Ornaments took the shape of bells celebrating International Harvester, the company formed when Deering Harvester merged with McCormmick; animals at Vizcaya, paying homage to the farm that once called the Village home; and orange and popcorn garlands, honoring the more simple decorating style of 100 years ago.
Vizcaya is proud to have donated 10% of our ticket capacity to our partners at the Lotus House, a local organization designed to give shelter to women and children in abusive relationships as they get back on their feet. Many of those tickets came through our Get a Ticket, Gift a Ticket program, demonstrating support for our partners from the community during the season of giving.
