Vizcaya for Educators
Teacher Workshop: Creative Writing and Reading with Vizcaya’s Archives and Collections
Friday, April 20, 2018
8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Archival resources and collections are essential for historic homes and museums for preservation, education and community engagement purposes. The care of archival records and collections is a full-time job that requires not only attention to detail and careful handling, but also research, information and extensive use of secondary sources. During this workshop educators will have the opportunity of working with Vizcaya’s unique archival resources and collections to research, compare and contrast primary and secondary sources, and find inspiration. Participants will dive deep into reading, creative writing skills, art, and creativity to create a collaborative book featuring Vizcaya’s archival material. Each educator will take back to school a package of digital resources to bring the activity to their classrooms. Educators that submit a class booklet by the end of the school year that is inspired on Vizcaya’s digital archival resources will be eligible for complimentary bus transportation and museum admission for up to 35 students the following school year. The workshop is for teachers working with K- through 12th-grade students. The workshop is $20 per person, limited to 25 participants, and includes breakfast, lunch and all materials.
